Five Lessons My Business Has Taught Me

I try to make a conscious effort to always be learning things in life and improving at the things I’m passionate about. Starting Helms Media in 2018 and working on it as my full-time job has taught me a lot. If you’re thinking of making your own business then hopefully these five lessons will help you not make the same mistakes as me. Sometimes it felt like a constant bombardment of lessons and at times to this day I still get that feeling five years later.

#1 Taxes SUCK but Tax Write-Offs Are Great

There’s nothing I dislike more than tax season. That’s not just a thing with owning my own business I hated paying taxes even as an employee. The good news is, as a business owner I’m able to write-off most things as long as I can show they were bought specifically for my business.

I’ve been able to write-off multiple keyboards. I used to be a big fan of building and reviewing keyboards on my YouTube channel. Every keyboard I bought or built was a tax write-off since they were all for the office and I’d cycle through them until I found the one I liked. That’s just one of MANY examples.

Keep in mind, not everything is a tax write-off and I’d suggest reaching out to your accountant before writing anything off. Which brings me to my next lesson learned…
